The residents and friends of The Philadelphia Protestant Home will have an overflow of festivities to participate in during this holiday season. The City of Philadelphia has long been an ideal setting for the holiday season. It is full of traditions and events, such as, the tree lighting ceremony at City Hall, ice skating at Dilworth Plaza and the Blue Cross River Rink, the German-themed open air Christmas Village in Love Park and the light and music show in the old Wanamaker building. Northeast Philadelphia has also had some lovely winter events over the years such as ice skating at the Tarken Recreation Center in Summerdale and the Rockledge/Fox Chase Business Association Tree Lighting Ceremony at Lyon’s Park in Fox Chase. Various churches and congregations in Northeast Philadelphia put on holiday concerts each December (a few will be listed at the end of this article).

The holidays, however, have also long been a special time to be at PPh. We have many long-tenured and outstanding holiday traditions that have been bringing smiles to the faces of our residents and their families for many years. Students from local elementary schools have been coming here to perform and meet Santa for 10+ years (this year the students will be from Rhawnhurst Elementary School) and each year we are fortunate to have Christmas caroling from local churches such as Immanuel Lutheran and/or Bethany United Church of Christ.

We have two new holiday events this year as the choir from Holy Ghost Prep will be performing Christmas songs for residents and members of the surrounding community in the Social Hall on Monday, December 7 at 6:30 p.m. Police officers from the 2nd and 15th districts will be having a Christmas party for local elementary students that were selected by their teachers in our Social Hall on December 9. These events, mixed with our beautiful Christmas decorations and festive spirit will make for a merry and toasty environment throughout December. We encourage all of you to participate/attend some of the events listed below. Please contact Bill Conaway, our Director of Community Relations, at 215-697-8194 if you have any questions regarding the following events.
