PPH resident Margaret Simon received her Registered Nurse (RN) certification in 1953 from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia.
She went on to work at St. Mary’s, Jeanes Hospital and spent 18 years at the American Oncologic Hospital (AOH) now known as Fox Chase Cancer Center. Margaret would have never imagined becoming a nurse when she was younger, however a job at St. Mary’s changed her mind. She worked in the supply area and was inspired by one of the Franciscan nuns, who was a nurse. She then decided that nursing was her calling.
When asked what she enjoyed about her nursing career she shared, “…to make people feel better and get through life.” This was especially important as Margaret spent the bulk of her career helping cancer patients. Margaret also shared advice for those in the nursing profession now and those interested in pursing a nursing career. “No matter what is happening in your personal life, leave it at the door. It’s all about the patient.”
Thank you Margaret!
