The Philadelphia Protestant Home, in conjunction with Jeanes Hospital, is pleased to introduce you to our new medical staff: Dr. Stephen P. Cowen, Dr. Lee A. Cowen, Dr. Mark Lee and Susan Shirato, DNP. All four are associated with Jeanes Hospital, and are available for any PPh residents that make them their primary care physicians. The relationship between PPh and Jeanes Hospital dates back nearly 30 years, allowing our residents the opportunity to take full advantage of the hospital’s outstanding medical staff. This week we are introducing Dr. Stephen Cowen and Dr. Lee Cowen. In two weeks, we’ll highlight Dr. Lee and Susan Shirato, DNP.


Dr. Stephen Cowen

Dr. Stephen P. Cowen has been treating patients in the Philadelphia community for more than 30 years, most recently at his private practice in Lawndale, Cowen & Biggans Medical Associates, PC. Dr. Cowen served as the medical director of an inpatient medical detoxification unit and has also worked as a medical director in a skilled nursing facility and in long-term care.

Dr. Stephen Cowen is currently a member of the medical staff of Jeanes Hospital, Holy Redeemer Hospital and The Philadelphia Protestant Home. He is an adjunct faculty member of the Physican Assistant programs for Salus University in Elkins Park, PA and Arcadia University in Glenside, PA. Dr. Cowen was named Practitioner of the Year in 2003 by the Caron Foundation for his contributions to addiction medicine. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Society and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.


Dr. Lee Cowen

Dr. Lee A. Cowen, brother of Dr. Stephen Cowen, joined Temple Health from Cowen & Biggans Medical Associates, where he practiced internal medicine. Prior to this, he served as an internist for Tenet Health System and Lawndale Medical Practice.

Dr. Lee Cowen is currently Medical Director of palliative care at Jeanes Hospital and the Holy Redeemer Hospice program. Prior to this, he served as Medical Director for Chapel Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Hospice of the Delaware Valley.

Dr. Lee Cowen currently teaches in the Physician Assistant Program at Salus University and the Adult Health and Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Nursing. He is a member of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, American Medical Directors Association, Pennsylvania Medical Directors Association, Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association, and the Eastern PA Long Term Care Physicians Group.
