Spring is right around the corner and is the perfect time to think about de-cluttering and simplifying your life. When people hear the term, “downsize”, it is usually met with resistance. Rightsizing is a better term as it describes a place where you want to be – you want to live in the right place, in the right space, and in the right state of mind.
“The things you own end up owning you.” – Chuck Palahniu
The process of creating space for what is important to you is powerful. When you are in a space that is too cluttered, your mind is focused on the clutter rather than the possibilities. In fact, clutter has been linked to weight gain, fatigue, and depression. Instead of feeling stress and anxiety as you look around at all of the “stuff”, imagine seeing open space that can free your mind to focus on other pursuits.
There are countless tips from “downsizing” experts, however starting small seems to be the most popular tip. For example, start with a drawer. This will help to motivate you and give you a small win and a sense of accomplishment. Once you have successfully tackled that drawer, move on to the next drawer. After that, tackle a shelf…you get the picture.
The hardest part of any task is getting started. Write down a plan for each day that you will work on rightsizing your space and follow it. A great suggestion is thinking about your “why.” What are you looking to accomplish and why are you doing it? Maybe you are looking to make a move in the next year and want to be ready and organized for when that time comes. Maybe you are tired of looking around at items that you no longer need or use. Maybe you want a playroom for your grand-kids or a space to work on a hobby. Start with your “why” and you will be surprised to see how quickly you are able to identify what you do not need.
