PPh Club Spotlight: The Craft Room

Posted on: Nov 03, 2015

Every year, the crafting groups at The Philadelphia Protestant Home donate hundreds of baby hats and blankets for the newborn babies at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and Pennsylvania Hospital (part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System). Those adorable little caps and blankets are hand made by the dedicated ladies that compose the various groups of PPh’s Craft Room.

There are three different crafting groups that make use of the Craft Room. The Monday group focuses on quilting blankets, and those blankets are sold at various craft shows and flea markets through out the year. The proceeds (as with all proceeds generated by the Craft Room) benefit PPh’s Benevolent Care Fund, a fund which assists our residents who have outlived their financial resources through no fault of their own. The Tuesday and Wednesday groups focus on making the baby caps and the blankets for the two hospitals. The Thursday group is more of an open crafting and knitting group that essentially allows for everyone to do as they please. Some make crafts such as wreaths and blankets to order, while others make items such as pillow cases and seasonal décor.

The PPh crafting groups are composed of residents, individuals from the surrounding community and friends and family of residents. The Craft Room is operated by the residents and volunteers, and it is open according to their schedules. You can find their hand-made items available for purchase on Thursday, November 5, at the PPh Auxiliary’s Christmas Bazaar. This event will be held in our Social Hall from 9:00 am to 1:30 p.m. Swing by and see all that our crafting groups have to offer!

What Residents Say

"In my nine years at PPH, I’ve grown to like it very much. At first, I felt like a stranger and then as I began to talk to people, we increasingly became good friends. A way to meet people is to join clubs. I’m now part of the PPH Auxiliary. I love helping with their flea markets because you never know what you can find. Recently, I’ve joined an evening quilting class. I love that I can continue to enjoy my life outside of PPH while experiencing the offers here.…especially the pool! Everything is just so convenient.

What Families Say

"My mom is sooo happy at PPH, I can’t even describe it in strong enough words. She’s met so many new friends and these ladies do EVERYTHING together! She sees Dad every day in Pathways, but can have her life too. She’s gone to so many activities and I think I’ve already been to Scoops with her at least 15 times. She loves the dining room and Bistro too. My sister, Ilene, and I are so delighted that Mom is happy.......Wow, it feels like Mom’s been there about 2 years—but it’s only 2 months!! That’s how comfortable and natural it feels for her – and for all of us.
