Virtually the Best Ways to See Philadelphia

Posted on: Jun 23, 2020

One of the things our residents love most about life at The Philadelphia Protestant Home (PPH) is its easy access to the bright lights of Philadelphia and all of the many attractions there, from sporting events to cultural attractions to historic sites. We frequently go as a community on excursions to explore the sights, sounds and tastes of the city. Everything, from the Liberty Bell to Phillies ball games, is just a short trip away.  Although these special attractions are currently closed to the public due to COVID-19, many of them are still open virtually 24 hours day. Here are some ways to explore the city of Brotherly Love with just a few clicks, right from the comfort of your couch.

1. Travel back in time to Independence Hall.

Get an inside look at the birthplace of freedom through a guided video tour of Independence Hall. See where the Declaration of Independence was signed and the constitution was written; hear the story of the Liberty Bell; and much more.

2. Go wild at the Philadelphia Zoo.

Hang out with exotic animals without leaving your home. Check out the full library of “Philly Zoo at 2” Facebook Live videos. Get up close with giant tortoises, meet a legless lizard, soar with a bald eagle and splash with a big, beautiful hippo!

3. Study your brain at The Franklin Institute.

Dig deep into your gray matter through interactive activities from the award-winning brain exhibit at the renowned Philadelphia science museum, The Franklin Institute.

4. Have a ball with the Phillies.

Replay all the highlights from the most memorable baseball games in “Phillies Must C,” a video series that features top moments from the 2019 season, miraculous saves and bat-cracking home runs.

5. Explore the City of Brotherly Love.

Now that you’ve visited some of Philadelphia’s individual attractions, it’s time to put on your tourist hat and explore the entire city. This 3D virtual tour takes you on a sightseeing trek across all of Philly’s best-loved spots, from Race Street Pier to Boathouse Row to Reading Terminal Market. While you’re watching, you can also listen to a commentator explain fascinating facts about the birthplace of America.

What Residents Say

"In my nine years at PPH, I’ve grown to like it very much. At first, I felt like a stranger and then as I began to talk to people, we increasingly became good friends. A way to meet people is to join clubs. I’m now part of the PPH Auxiliary. I love helping with their flea markets because you never know what you can find. Recently, I’ve joined an evening quilting class. I love that I can continue to enjoy my life outside of PPH while experiencing the offers here.…especially the pool! Everything is just so convenient.

– Lucille Hite, Independent Living resident

What Families Say

"My mom is sooo happy at PPH, I can’t even describe it in strong enough words. She’s met so many new friends and these ladies do EVERYTHING together! She sees Dad every day in Pathways, but can have her life too. She’s gone to so many activities and I think I’ve already been to Scoops with her at least 15 times. She loves the dining room and Bistro too. My sister, Ilene, and I are so delighted that Mom is happy.......Wow, it feels like Mom’s been there about 2 years—but it’s only 2 months!! That’s how comfortable and natural it feels for her – and for all of us.
